Botox®
Botox® (purified botulinum toxin) has been used for cosmetic facial rejuvenation since the late 1980’s, originally pioneered by ophthalmologist Dr. Jean Carruthers of Vancouver, B.C. She was using the chemical to treat chronic blepharospasm, an irritating condition in which the tiny muscles controlling eyelid movement twitch incessantly. It was surprising to her when a number of her patients returned stating that the skin lines between their eyebrows had improved in appearance. Subsequent treatments began with cosmetic intent. She and her husband, a dermatologist, have since written and taught extensively on this application of the chemical.
Botox cosmetic treatments are a quick, virtually painless way to flatten, soften and diminish small to medium folds and lines, not only between the brows, but also around the eyes, nose and lower face. Botox works to diminish the appearance of dynamic rhytids (lines that appear with movement), but has other facial rejuvenation applications, as well. For instance, by injecting a triangular shaped muscle on the side of the chin called the depressor angularis oris, the corner of the mouth can be gently raised to improve overall appearance of the lower face.
